huna Natural Apothecary – Simple Skin Nutrition from Canada

I am impressed! And a little ashamed.

I have to admit that I have been rather arrogant in judging organic skin care from around the world. Particularly between Europe and the New World, whilst I have always considered European organic skin care superior.

Central Europe (this is what I can tell from own experience) is pretty advanced when it comes for example to environmentalism, organic foods, green products, recycling etc., and also organic skin care standards.

However I am happy to say that the more I travel between Europe and the US these days, I get to know more small manufacturers of organic skin care in the New World.

And I am impressed about the quality, passion and high standards that go into their products!

Today I present – until now – not yet well known (and I am sure this is going to change soon!) organic skin nutrition from Canada called huna Natural Apothecary.

huna Natural Apothecary calls their products ‘simple skin nutrition, that feed, nourish and protect skin with natural and organic ingredients’. It is all about skin health and nutrition which brings out the skins natural radiance, glow, even texture, and health.

The women behind huna

No wonder that the products are amazing: beautiful founder and formulator Heather Urquhart is botanist, a chartered herbalist (in-training), natural cosmetic formulator and healthy-living enthusiast!

The huna philosophy

‘All huna products are professionally handcrafted in small batches using ethically and sustainably-sourced natural, organic + Canadian ingredients. Our skincare is biodegradable, earth-kind, cruelty-free and tested on humans, never animals.

huna is made of everyday ingredients you know, trust, can pronounce and perhaps even consume on a regular basis to achieve nutritional health. huna isnt like mainstream skincare brands. We wont offer you miracle promises in fancy jars. Just real ingredients with real results. huna produces all products made fresh-to-order, and most products will last approximately 12 months from the date of purchase.’

My Product Test

Heather had kindly sent me three products of her skin nutrition from Canada to try: a facial mist, a serum, and a cleansing cream.

Hydrate and Refresh Botanical Face Mist

A facial mist is probably amongst the handful of items that I would be allowed to take to the remote island… I love facial mists as an immediate pick-me-up anytime of the day (even over other creams or makeup), and it is the first thing I apply in the morning to my cuddle-wrinkles when waking up. It is great out of the fridge on a hot summer day too! I also use facial mist in replacement for a toner in between the various steps of my skin care routine.

What I like about huna’s face mist in the amber glass mister bottle specifically is the very fine yet strong diffuser. The liquid is diffused finely, whilst the pump is strong enough.

A diffuser has obvious advantages: no cotton pads needed, no product waste, even application… anything else you need to be convinced?

Ingredients like rose, aloe and watermelon provide the happy scent

and instantly hydrate, refresh, revive and nourish my skin.

Revitalize age-grace Face Serum

wow, the serum is beautiful.

With the orange/amber colour, it reminds me of carrot oil. The texture is somewhere between an oily serum and light facial oil, yet leaves no shine at all! Only a lovely sun kissed look, proving me with an instant healthy glow.
Ageing in grace and beauty.

Renew and Replenish Cleansing Cream and MakeUp Remover

The cleansing cream comes with small bamboo spatula and muslin cloth. It is a solid butter, containing ucuuba, mango (vitamins A and C), papaya extract (gently exfoliating dry spots), and jojoba oil (rich in vitamin E).

The manufacturer gives the following instructions: “apply to dry or damp skin, massage gently, and remove with damp cleansing cloth. the Cleansing Creme will melt into a creamy liquid-consistency upon contact with the skin’s heat, which aids in dispersing and massaging. (should the Cleansing Creme liquefy in the jar (during summer months)- simply pop into the refrigerator for 10-15 minutes to firm up, or you may choose to store in the refrigerator.) huna Cleansing Creme is a natural formula containing botanical ingredients. Use the bamboo spatula to remove product from the jar, and be careful not to allow water to enter the jar, as it will compromise the product quality and integrity.”

Spa Geek Knowledge Ucuuba Butter

Ucuuba butter comes from the ucuuba tree, native to Central and South America and the Amzonas, in swamp like areas. This fast growing tree produces very fatty seeds, which is reflected in the name (ucuu = fat, uba=tree). The butter is pretty solid and of yellowish colour, and rich in essential fatty acids.

Ucuuba is non-comedogenic, so it won’t clog pores and it heals acne breakouts while helping to fade acne scars. Ucuuba butter has a natural earthy scent, which contributes to the characteristic rich, intoxicating aroma-benefits. It has anti-fungal, antibacterial, and antiseptical properties.
